Short Course A: Demystifying the Open File Format for NDE Data

Explore how a new open, standardized file format for NDE data built on HDF5 enables seamless integration, easier sharing, and scalable analytics. Includes real-world use cases from leading companies.

Course Overview

The premise of Industry 4.0 is built on the seamless flow of information across systems and platforms—a vision where all industrial data "speaks the same language." For the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) industry, realizing this vision requires an open, standardized file format that promotes data accessibility, interoperability, and future readiness.

This 4-hour short course introduces attendees to a newly proposed open file format specifically designed for NDE data acquisition. Developed using the robust and extensible Hierarchical Data Format (HDF5), this file structure allows for the storage of acquisition data and configuration metadata in a clear, organized, and software-agnostic way. This approach eliminates the need for proprietary software or development kits, dramatically reducing barriers to data exchange and post-processing.

Upon Completion, Learners Will Be Able To:

  • Identify the key motivations for developing an open file format for NDE data.
  • Describe the technical structure and contents of the proposed file format.
  • Examine current use cases, including phased array weld inspections, corrosion mapping, and composite evaluation.
  • Recognize how the format supports multiple NDE methods, including current capabilities for PAUT and future support for eddy current and others.
  • Explain how the format enables NDE 4.0 applications such as AI-assisted defect detection, digital twins, and statistical analysis.

Short Course B: Unlocking the Power of Full Matrix Capture (FMC)

Learn how Full Matrix Capture (FMC), Total Focusing Method (TFM), and Phase Coherence Imaging (PCI) enhance ultrasonic inspections through improved resolution, flaw characterization, and practical application guidance.

Course Overview

Full Matrix Capture (FMC) is revolutionizing ultrasonic testing by enabling advanced post-processing techniques that go far beyond conventional phased array inspections. This 4-hour short course provides a comprehensive introduction to FMC and its key imaging modalities—Total Focusing Method (TFM) and Phase Coherence Imaging (PCI)—to help participants fully understand their practical benefits, technical considerations, and application potential.

This course is ideal for inspectors, engineers, and technicians who want to deepen their understanding of FMC-based imaging and understand the benefits of one method over the other.

Upon Completion, Learners Will Be Able To:

  • Explain the principles of Full Matrix Capture (FMC) data acquisition and its advantages over conventional phased array techniques
  • Describe the fundamentals of amplitude-based Total Focusing Method (TFM), including how focal laws are applied to generate high-resolution images
  • Identify key factors that influence TFM image quality, such as coverage, aperture, and resolution
  • Summarize the core concepts behind Phase Coherence Imaging (PCI) and how it differs from amplitude-based methods
  • Compare the capabilities and limitations of TFM and PCI in detecting flaws and improving signal-to-noise ratios, particularly in challenging inspection scenarios
  • Interpret sample inspection data using both TFM and PCI to evaluate their practical performance in welds, complex geometries, and noisy materials
  • Apply best practices for FMC-based inspections, including system setup, scan planning, and image interpretation
  • Evaluate which imaging modality, TFM or PCI, is best suited for specific inspection applications

Short Course C: Special Topics on Implementation of Employers' Written Practice

Learn how to implement NAS 410 / EN 4179 for aerospace NDT personnel qualification, including Written Practice requirements, techniques, proficiency reviews, recertification, and best practices from industry experts.

Course Overview

NAS 410 / EN 4179 is the primary standard for NDT personnel qualification in the aerospace industry. This qualification standard adopts an employer-based qualification system, assuming the Employer is ultimately responsible for the qualification of its NDT personnel. Employer designates the Responsible Level III, the sole responsible person to implement Employer´s requirements in a sufficiently effective manner such that Employer´s NDT personnel shall be competent to do their daily work on Employer´s product/maintenance portfolio of parts and components and understand their roles and responsibilities. All related essential information should be established in the Employer´s Written Practice document, which governs the NDT personnel qualification at the Employer.

This short course shall address general requirements as well as more advanced topics on the implementation of the Written Practice according to NAS 410 / EN 4179 qualification standard at the Employer correctly. Special attention will be given to the implementation of:

  • Techniques
  • Annual Proficiency Review procedure
  • Recertification by Awarded Credit Activity
  • Gap analysis when transferring a qualification
  • Use of Outside Agencies and/or NANDTBs

This short course will provide to the audience examples of best practices from a professional Outside Agency approved by Czech (EU member) NANDTB (i.e. compliant to AMC.145.A.30(f) set of requirements), that is assisting companies all over the world to comply with customer, Nadcap, or the local authority (CAA, EASA, etc.) requirements.

Upon Completion, Learners Will Be Able To:

  • Explain the purpose and structure of NAS 410 / EN 4179 as it applies to aerospace NDT personnel qualification.
  • Describe the employer-based qualification system and the responsibilities of the Employer and Responsible Level 3.
  • Interpret the key elements required in a Written Practice document in accordance with NAS 410 / EN 4179.
  • Identify requirements and best practices for implementing NDT techniques under an employer's Written Practice.
  • Apply procedures for conducting Annual Proficiency Reviews and managing Recertification by Awarded Credit Activity.
  • Analyze and address qualification gaps when transferring personnel between employers or systems.
  • Evaluate the appropriate use of Outside Agencies and/or NANDTBs in meeting qualification and oversight requirements.
  • Recognize common audit findings and compliance challenges from authorities such as Nadcap, EASA, and national CAAs.
