tour of empa demonstrators

Join us for a tour of the ISNDCM host facilities on Friday 18 August.

NEST - Exploring the Future of Buildings

NEST is the modular research and innovation building of Empa and Eawag. At NEST, new technologies, materials and systems are tested, researched, further developed and validated under real conditions. Close cooperation with partners from research, industry and the public sector ensures that innovative construction and energy technologies are put onto the market faster. NEST contributes to making the use of resources and energy more sustainable and circular.

The research and innovation units are NEST’s bustling experimental labs. Designed as office environments or living space, they are platforms for research and development under realistic conditions. The units stem from partnerships between research institutions and innovative companies. For instance, the Urban Mining & Recycling unit demonstrates how a responsible approach to dealing with our natural resources can go hand in hand with appealing architectural form. Find out more about NEST and its different operative and planned units here.

Coating Competence Center

In the Coating Competence Center (CCC), new technologies are developed by bringing key players along the value chain, and by closing the gap between lab-scale research and industrial production. This includes all aspects of technologies: materials, processes and machines. The CCC mission is to transfer new ideas and successful developments from the lab into industrial applications and enable companies to produce the next generation of products with innovative and cost-efficient manufacturing technologies. Find out more about the Coating Competence Center here.

The Center for X-ray Analytics

Empa's Center for X-ray Analytics (CXA) enforces X-ray analytical method developments for materials science and technologies. The creation of new materials is strongly connected to the possibilities for a comprehensive analysis of their properties. Analytical methods do not only provide knowledge about the materials, but also support understanding of the production process of these materials. The CXA combines a unique expertise and infrastructure in one laboratory combining X-ray diffraction, scattering and 3D imaging going from the Ångström to the meter scale. The interface with materials research groups and industry is the basis for studying structure – function relationships which in turn enables tailoring materials and materials systems properties. Find out more about the Center for X-ray Analytics here.
