Call For Proposals

The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) will hold its 30th Research Symposium 20 – 23 June, 2022. Make plans now to participate in the premier forum for the exchange of advances in nondestructive evaluation.

The theme for the 30th Symposium, Impacting the present and future frontiers in NDE, emphasizes the importance of NDE across several industries and advanced manufacturing, and how the digital age is changing NDE through artificial intelligence, machine learning, and NDE 4.0.

The ASNT Research Council Program Committee seeks the following proposals:

  • Technical Presentations
  • Papers Previously Published in ME/RNDE in 2020 or 2021
  • Student Poster Presentations
  • Panel Sessions

Proposals Should:

  • Address Important Research Questions
  • Increase the Knowledge and Skills of Scholars and Industry Professionals
  • Promote the Development of the NDE Profession
  • Showcase Methodological Rigor

Submissions

Submissions for the technical program must be accompanied by a two to four page Proceedings Paper to be considered for presentation.  Papers will be peer reviewed and accepted/presented papers will be included in the the conference proceedings*.

Each submission will be reviewed and scored by at least two peer reviewers. Final decisions about papers will be made by the ASNT Research Council Program Chair and Vice Chair along with ASNT staff. Acceptance notification will be made by 1 April, 2022.

Accepted authors agree to register for, and attend, the Symposium and present as scheduled. All funding for fees, travel, and accommodations shall be obtained independent of ASNT.

Symposium Proceedings - Now Open Access!

Presenters are required to prepare and submit a two to four page Proceedings Paper for inclusion in the peer reviewed ASNT Research Symposium Proceedings. The proceedings, including ISBN and DOI numbers, will be provided to all conference attendees and published in the ASNT Digital Library. The proceedings will be citable and searchable on Google Scholar.

The Symposium proceedings will be made available to the public, in the ASNT Digital Library, via the Creative Commons CC BY-ND 4.0 license

Additional RNDE Publication Opportunity

Authors are also encouraged to expand their proceeding paper to eight to ten pages in length for publication consideration in a special Symposium edition of Research in Nondestructive Evaluation (RNDE). Deadline for submission of expanded papers will be 1 August, 2022

Previously Published Papers

The organizers of the 2022 ASNT Research Symposium are excited to announce the inclusion of oral presentation of research papers that have already been published in Materials Evaluation (ME) and Research in Nondestructive Evaluation (RNDE) during 2020-2021 calendar years. Authors of these papers can submit a short abstract (250 words) for consideration to be included in the Research Symposium Program. The citation of the already-published paper must be clearly provided at the end of the short abstract.

Since these presentations will be about the scientific contents of an already-published paper, the short abstract will not be published in the Research Symposium Proceedings. However, this opportunity provides the authors to showcase their works to the Symposium attendees for greater exposure. The attendees will also benefit by the additional briefings on the subject matter and subsequent discussions with the authors. Submitters of these short abstracts may choose the mode of delivery (i.e., oral or poster). These oral presentations will be spread throughout the program as deemed appropriate for a given session, or will be included in the poster sessions, as selected by the author.  The presenters are required to clearly provide the citation of their papers, as having been previously published.

These presentations must follow the same regular registration process as other papers submitted to the Research Symposium.

Tutorials (scheduled has been filled)

Another great addition to the the 2022 schedule will be the addition of a day Tutorials. Held on Monday, 20 June, 2022, each Tutorial is expected to last for about 50-60 minutes with ~10-20 minutes of Q/A. They are intended to focus on fundamental issues and not  “narrow” advances in technology. Tutorials on major recent advances may be considered if deemed pertinent to the focus of the Tutorials and the needs of the community. These sessions will be  and will be made available to all conference attendees for a nominal fee.

Student Poster Competition

Returning in 2022 is the inclusion of a Student Poster Competition in the symposium program.  The Research Symposium does not formally make a distinction between an oral or a poster delivery of a paper, since both go through the same review process of the 2-4 page Proceedings Papers and once accepted both appear in the symposium proceedings.

We invite student authors who submit their proposals to the Research Symposium to consider entering their contributions into the Student Poster Competition. Interested students should check the appropriate box during the submission of the proposal indicating their desire to participate in this competition.  Subsequent to the review process and the acceptance of the paper, a limited number of Posters will be selected for this competition, solely based on the reviews received.  These Posters must be authored by the presenting author and may include other co-authors such as student colleagues and advisors, as appropriate. However, the primary research work must have been performed by the presenting student author.

The panel of judges will assemble and rank the Posters and the top two will be selected as the recipients of the First Place and Second Place Winners of the 2022 ASNT Research Symposium. The winners will be announced during the Thursday general session and presented with a certificate and awards of $200 and $100 respectively.
