Biography

Professor A. R. Mohanty is currently a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India. He has been a faculty at this institute since 1996. He was also honored with the Shyamal Ghosh and Sunanda Ghosh Chair Professor position in the same department from 2017 to 2020. Professor Mohanty was the head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2019 to 2022. Prior to joining IIT Kharagpur he worked in the R&D department of Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, USA. Prof. Mohanty has also worked in the R&D of Larsen and Toubro Limited, Mumbai, India. Prof. Mohanty holds a PhD in the areas of Noise Control from the University of Kentucky, USA, a masters in Machine Design from IIT Kharagpur and a B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, India. Prof. Mohanty was a post doctoral fellow at the Ray W. Herrick Labs of Purdue University. Professor Mohanty’s research interest are in the areas of noise control and machinery condition monitoring. Professor Mohanty’s research group has done pioneering work in the areas of motor current signature analysis for fault detection in rotating machines. Another major research contribution of Professor Mohanty has been in the use of natural materials for noise control. Professor Mohanty has been a consultant to more than 100 industries in India and abroad like, BMW, Philips, Whirlpool, Caterpillar to name a few in these areas. His sponsored research projects in the areas of noise control and machinery condition monitoring are funded by many government agencies and industries. Professor Mohanty has more than 200 journal and conference publications, four book chapters and one book on “Machinery Condition Monitoring: Principles and Practices”, CRC Press, (2014), to his credit. His NPTEL and GIAN lectures on Machinery Condition Monitoring and Acoustics & Industrial Noise Control are available on YOU TUBE. He is in the editorial board of Journal of Muli Body Dynamics, Proceedings of IMechE, UK . Professor Mohanty has had many visiting professor positions at universities in Singapore, France and the United States of America. Professor serves in many national and international committees as expert member in the areas of noise control and automotive technology. He has received several awards like the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Teaching at the University of Kentucky (1993), Rais Ahmed Memorial (2009) and M. S. Narayanan Memorial (2015) Award of the Acoustical Society of India, Star Alumnus Award of NIT Rourkela (2015), Dr. V. Bhujanga Rao Endowment Lecture Award (2019) of the Condition Monitoring Society of India. He is fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Acoustical Society of India, Condition Monitoring Society of India, Institution of Engineers (India) and the International Society for Engineering Asset Management. He is also a registered chartered engineer in India. He was selected by the they Ministry of Human Resources Development, of the Government of India to be a participant in the Leadership for Academics Program (LEAP) at Cambridge University, UK in 2019.
