Eddy Current Innovation for Hard Spots on Ferrous Materials (R&D)

Presentation Description

This presentation introduces a practical, field-proven methodology for identifying and grading hard spots on ferrous pipelines using a combination of Eddy Current Array (ECA), Tangential Eddy Current Array (TECA), and field hardness testing. Developed through cross-industry collaboration, the research aims to eliminate traditional, time-consuming surface preparation processes—such as grinding and polishing—while maintaining accuracy in hardness assessment.

Attendees will gain a clear, step-by-step understanding of how to apply ECA and TECA technologies to locate hard spots, validate them through Leeb hardness testing, and correlate signal behavior across frequencies to hardness values. The session emphasizes signal interpretation, field adaptability, and data overlay techniques that can be immediately incorporated into daily inspection workflows.

Designed with adult learners in mind, this session offers hands-on relevance, real case examples, and data-driven decision-making tools—equipping NDT professionals with actionable techniques to enhance pipeline integrity evaluations and support Engineering Critical Assessments (ECA).
