Field-Driven Innovation in Corrosion Mapping: A New Standard for Handheld Phased-Array Devices

Presentation Description

Corrosion mapping and thickness measurement in field conditions remain a persistent challenge for asset integrity management, often hindered by poor data reliability, limited traceability, and complex user interfaces. EKOSCAN and its partners are addressing these limitations through the development of a next-generation handheld device that redefines the standards of portable non-destructive testing (NDT). This compact solution combines advanced phased-array ultrasonic technology with a rugged, ergonomic mechanical design tailored for harsh industrial environments. Key innovations include the integration of flexible probes, adaptive wedges, and minimal water consumption, enabling high-performance scanning across complex geometries with minimal operational burden. The system also features embedded 2-axis encoding, ensuring precise spatial localization and repeatability of measurements—critical for accurate corrosion mapping and long-term asset monitoring. Complementing the hardware, the device incorporates a streamlined, error-proof software interface, empowering NDT operators with intuitive controls, guided acquisition workflows, and real-time analysis. By merging advanced imaging, precise encoding, and intelligent interface design, the solution delivers high-fidelity, traceable data, even in the most demanding conditions. This paper outlines the technological framework, field-oriented design choices, and performance outcomes of this device, demonstrating its potential to bridge the gap between high-end inspection capabilities and the practical realities of on-site deployment

Biography

Dr. Guillaume Neau performed his PhD research at Imperial College, London, and the University of Bordeaux. Before joining EKOSCAN INTEGRITY he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique (CEA) in Paris, and then applied his training in ultrasonic measurements and modeling at Dassault Aviation, where he designed nondestructive-testing techniques for aerospace structures. After 16 years with M2M NDT/EDDYFI, he’s now Chief Strategy Officer of EKOSCAN INTEGRITY.
