Exploring how ASNT is catalyzing industry-awareness on Ethics and Human Factors for AI/ML applications - An insider’s look
Presentation Description
This presentation examines ASNT’s AI/ML Committee Work in advancing strategic initiatives to promote ethical considerations and human factors in artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) applications for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) systems. Traditionally, NDE practitioners recognize four fundamental elements in testing: an energy source, a test object, their interaction, and a recording medium-with human intervention serving as an often unaddressed fifth presence. The emergence of AI/ML introduces a sixth critical element to this ecosystem, offering extraordinary opportunities while raising significant ethical questions. Through its Engineering Council’s AI/ML Committee and Ethics and Human Factors (E&HF) Workgroup, ASNT aims to shape conceptual frameworks and disseminate best practices that ensure AI/ML technologies enhance rather than compromise human capabilities in NDE processes. This work directly addresses the symposium theme “New Horizons: The intersection of technology, community, and collaboration” by fostering a collaborative approach to technological advancement that prioritizes human values and community needs. The presentation provides an insider’s perspective on how ASNT’s councils are working in creating guidance resources that should contribute to balance technological innovation with ethical responsibility, ensuring that AI/ML serves as an unmistakable ally to human expertise.
