Short Course B: Unlocking the Power of Full Matrix Capture (FMC): From Amplitude-Based TFM to Phase Coherence Imaging (PCI)

12:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Presentation Description

Full Matrix Capture (FMC) is revolutionizing ultrasonic testing by enabling advanced post-processing techniques that go far beyond conventional phased array inspections. This 4-hour short course provides a comprehensive introduction to FMC and its key imaging modalities—Total Focusing Method (TFM) and Phase Coherence Imaging (PCI)—to help participants fully understand their practical benefits, technical considerations, and application potential.
The session begins by demystifying the fundamentals of FMC data acquisition and the reconstruction principles behind amplitude-based TFM. Attendees will learn how focal laws are applied across the full matrix to generate highly resolved images and how inspection quality is influenced by coverage, aperture, and resolution.
Building on that foundation, the course will introduce PCI, an emerging imaging technique that utilizes phase information rather than amplitude alone. Participants will explore how PCI enhances flaw characterization and improves signal-to-noise ratio, particularly in challenging materials.
Live demonstrations and sample data reviews will highlight the comparative strengths of TFM and PCI in real-world inspections, including welds, complex damage mechanisms and noisy material. The course will also include practical guidance on system setup, scan planning, and image interpretation to help participants apply these methods with confidence in their own work.
This course is ideal for inspectors, engineers, and technicians who want to deepen their understanding of FMC-based imaging and understand the benefits of one method over the other.
