Details

NDE 4.0 has been a topic of enthusiastic conversation at ASNT conferences for several years. NDE 4.0 involves the integration of several technologies, including automation and process control, augmented reality, digital twins, AI, and machine learning. NDE 4.0 is essentially the integration of NDE within corporate and even global levels of data management and resource planning.
An increasing level of automation and integration is already visible in many sectors of the NDE community, and the benefits are manifold. Nevertheless, it can be confusing or even daunting to think about all the implications of the emerging future that we call NDE 4.0. Many inspections are still operating in an analog (NDE 2.0) way. Many manufacturers have automated and digitized portions of their NDE processes, but they have not fully integrated them with the factory. This is an NDE 3.0 scenario.
Many of us are unsure whether or how we should approach a greater level of automation and integration, what the benefits might be, and what efforts would be involved.
In this talk, we will offer some ways to think about “NDE 3.5” or the incremental steps between the current state of our NDE systems and processes and the potential NDE 4.0 future. We will discuss some of the opportunities for higher levels of automation and integration and the benefits that can come from their implementation, even if a fully NDE 4.0 level of integration is not the end goal.

Presentation Description

Biography

Dave Seto is the Director of Business Development for UTEX Scientific Instruments, based in Mississauga, Ontario Canada. Prior to this current role, Dave was a senior NDE applications developer, providing software and integration for automated inspection systems in nuclear power, aerospace, and space vehicle manufacturing. His more recent work has involved automating NDE systems using ultrasonic, eddy current, and microwave sensing technologies, while integrating these NDE processes within the factory wide manufacturing and automation ecosystem.
