Education is Ever Changing
How do we get from yesterday to tomorrow?
There are many different avenues for newcomers to receive the classroom training for NDT. Among those are your company, outside training facilities, online, or from a trainer/Level III. We will discuss the model that is still employed today versus how our young people are being taught through high school. What works and what doesn’t, different methodologies for different age groups, and the quality of the instruction. In order to facilitate conversation, we will be diving into these topics:
1. How has learning changed over the years from secondary education, and have we as an industry kept up with these changes?
2. With all of our training options in industry are we utilizing the best approach, or are we just checking a box on certification paperwork?
3. Should industry be more involved with secondary education reaching kids at a younger age, and if so, how does that look?
With education constantly changing and it being a topic in industry for my whole career we will just be scratching the surface with these questions, but it will give people some opinions of others to consider, and hopefully produce good/actionable ideas.
With the landscape changing in our workforce and how we reach people will be paramount with the labor shortage we are seeing not just in NDT, but all of skilled trades. I will be able to speak from experience having gone through training at a college initially, then training with outside facilities for advanced certifications, teaching for companies I worked for, teaching as a Level III consultant, managing divisions, and now circling back and bringing the NDT education to the high school level in a unique format that to my knowledge has not been done before.
