Details

API 653 inspections are a requirement for tank owners, but when performed with new technologies, they can be completed without halting production. Robotic technologies make it possible to inspect tank components without taking it offline, eliminating the opportunity cost of removing an asset from service. Robotic crawlers use ultrasound and high-definition cameras to inspect tank shells and roofs externally, identifying corrosion, pitting, and other damage mechanisms affecting the inner and outer diameters of the base material. Submersible robotic crawlers can swim through several refined products to reach the tank floor and perform ultrasonic testing, visual inspection, and settlement surveys. Combining these techniques can satisfy the API requirements for external and internal inspections, allowing for the deferral of future inspections as permitted.
