Case study - Subsea PA and ToFD inspections using remote-robotic solutions

Presentation Description

This presentation explores advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technologies, emphasizing subsea phased array and Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD) inspections using remote-robotic solutions.

It highlights the integration of the OEM-PA Mini electronics by AOS with a 64/128 architecture for high-resolution data processing.
Key topics include 0-degree corrosion mapping with beam-forming phased array techniques and advanced methods like Full Matrix Capture (FMC) and Total Focusing Method (TFM).
Additionally, it covers multi-zone focused phased array and ToFD inspections for in-service weld seam damage.

The presentation also features micrograph images comparing destructive testing results with phased array and ToFD data, demonstrating the effectiveness of these NDT methods.

Biography

Born in South Africa, Gideon van Zyl matriculated in 2008 and embarked on a career in NDT, focusing on power stations. In 2009, Gideon joined Sonomatic, specializing in Ultrasonic-based NDT inspections on refineries across South Africa and Australia. By 2014, his expertise expanded to offshore and robotic subsea ultrasonic inspections. Gideon then achieved obtaining ASNT UT Level 3 certification. In 2017, Gideon relocated to Texas and focused on subsea inspections, later becoming Operations Manager for the Americas in 2021. Despite his managerial responsibilities, Gideon remains active in the field, conducting Subsea PAUT inspections and advanced Ultrasonic inspections (FMC-TFM) nuclear inspections.
